Senior Wrestling World Championship 2019

In September 2019, Vickrant Mahajan was appointed by the Wrestling Federation of India as the Indian senior wrestling team’s motivator for the 2019 World Wrestling Championship held in Nursultan, Kazakhstan, from 14 to 22 September. This was the first time ever in India’s sporting history that a motivator accompanied the national team for a world championship in any sport. As part of his assignment, Vickrant motivated all the Indian wrestlers, coaches and support staff throughout the championship.
The star-studded Indian wrestling contingent comprised two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar, 2016 Rio Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik, World # 1 65 kg freestyle wrestler Bajrang Punia, 2018 Asian Games gold medallist Vinesh Phogat, 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sumit Malik and 2019 junior world champion Deepak Punia, among many other stalwarts.
It turned out to be India’s best-ever world championship, where it won five medals and got four direct Olympic qualifications. Team India’s previous best was at the 2013 world championship in Budapest, Hungary, where it had won three medals. Vis-à-vis the Olympics, this was the best-ever performance by India in any sport at a world-championship level and was double the previous best of two direct Olympic qualifications from the 2018 shooting world championship in Changwon, South Korea. In terms of total medals won, India was ninth overall and it was the first time it figured in the Top 10 in terms of total medals won.
